winter

january 2018

what a month. it felt more like spring than anything else, but little did we know, snow was coming.

at the beginning of the month we continued our yearly tradition of seeing temple square lights after christmas… like on the day they turn them off. we like to live on the edge. in regards to food, i’m still cooking it up in tiny kitchen. another day, another pizza experiment. if your new years resolution is to eat more salad then i recommend this. also trader joe’s pizza dough is the best around. aaaaand, new year, new glasses. considering that i need them to see and they fall on the ground of hospitals frequently, i needed a cheap upgrade.

one weekend we went snowshoeing with some friends up at alta. it was so beautiful and actually felt like winter, something that we appreciated indeed. they’re getting married in march so it was fun to listen to brit’s wedding planning all while knowing that i won’t ever go through that again. phew.

and, january meant sundance! one of the best parts about living in utah is volunteering during the film festival. there are lots of perks and i just really love park city. this year i was on a theatre crew at the library theatre. that meant i spent my time telling people to follow signs and scoot in to the middle because it was going to be a full house. very fun. adults cannot follow directions. i saw lots of great films and a few big names. aaand i got the coveted volunteer jacket that is a big deal to no one other than sundance volunteers but i still wear it proudly… along with my geeky credential, pictured above. also isn’t thins the most picturesque view out the bathroom window??

mom came for a visit! i love seeing her. we went to settebello and saw the greatest showman. she slept on my couch and every time she has to sleep on that dumb thing i am more motivated to get a bigger place with a real bed for my poor mother. also i helped throw a bridal shower for britni! and i spent way too much time crafting this backdrop and making a banner that i should have just bought but thought i could be the DIY queen for once. it says love at first swipe. don’t worry, no one else got it either. but they met on tinder so at least the party girl thought it was funny!!! and a saturday spent in provo. i feel like such a granny every time i go there and i am among thousands of bright eyed bushy tailed college students. we went to pizza factory and ate carbs on sticks. does it get any better! tyler is modeling said breadstick.

besides that, i worked a lot and got some big news!!!!!

BYU rejected me from their NP program. lol.

i took it hard for a couple days but then decided it just wasn’t in the cards and continuing to work will be good for me and my resume. better days ahead!

we will end with my two best january creations.

my awful rat’s nest hair after working all week and living the bun life right before a good washing, and totchos.

totchos, you ask? tater tots with layers of cheese, beans, and soyrizo. with sour cream and guac. because sometimes you gotta clean out your fridge. try it!!!!!

january 2017

january… sheesh…

it was a good, long, draggy month filled with wedding countdown, throwing money every which way to pay for said wedding, and only a couple meltdowns on my part! it was kind of like clearing a huge hurdle some days, but i did some great things, as made evidence by the following!

here’s some highlights:

HOMESTEAD CRATER! for my sister’s birthday we went swimming in some thermal waters in midway. tyler refused to wear a snorkel but we had a good time! fun time with the sisters and my mom (who couldn’t get in the water because of dumb surgery. UGH next time)

SO MUCH SNOW! ok this isn’t really a highlight after christmas, like, let’s get honest it just gets in the way of life, but we survived it, and it made for a good trip to see the temple lights the night before they were taken down! yes, i live a 5 minute walk away from the lights… but it was actually a better idea because there were probably 10 people there. win.

BRIDAL SHOWER! some of my best friends from my years at byu threw me a great bridal shower. we ate, laughed, opened gifts, and played games. my friend kelsey recorded tyler answering a bunch of questions about our relationship, which was really cute and pretty funny.

TRIP OUT EAST! two weeks before our wedding, i went to see friends in DC and take a final trip to new york before becoming a mrs to see HAMILTON! tickets are generally difficult to snag, so we felt pretty dang lucky to snag these tickets for a saturday matinee last january! haha it seemed so far away when we purchased them! time flies

and now for the good posts! WEDDING TIMES!!!! stay tuned.

lately

it’s been awhile. sorry, i’ve just been too busy getting good grades. (ha)

big bear cafe is becoming my spot. do i order anything? nope never. do i unabashedly bask in their indie cool environment where every attendant is reading a vintage paperback, wearing a beanie and flannel, and pouring tea from a kettle that came straight from the west indies (or world market, same difference)? yep. yep. yep. (do i also feel real self conscious in my uggs? always)

running on u street is a complete pain because you’ve got to dodge a lot of folks, yet i always find myself here. i also always wonder what TRUE REFORMER BUILDING actually means.

my favorite part of the city; logan circle. it is so underrated. let’s keep it that way. also, this is post-haircut selfie time, where i am in limbo between shock and mania/euphoria. Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

on sunday i didn’t have to work so we went to anacostia and fed homeless women and watched the oscars. i figured if i was going to waste at least four hours of my life watching pointless nothing, i might as well do some service beforehand to make myself feel better.

also, i’m mad birdman beat out boyhood, but i guess that is now just water under the bridge.

that’s all folks! here’s to spring’s quick approach and more green grass replacing bleak grey skies.

journal 52: valentine’s day

a list of everything i did on valentine’s day:

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset1. wake up at 8:34

2. check phone. blearily stumble through instagram, twitter, facebook, email, timehop, instagram (yes twice)

3. stumble out of bed and to bathroom. pee

3. eat leftover cold black beans and sweet potatoes out of the fridge. still hungry. make a green smoothie with a banana that has been sitting on the counter for 2 weeks. cover up the weird taste with a lot of frozen pineapple and spinach. still hungry. eat 1.5 frozen sunflower seed butter & dried cranberry balls that were created during an experiment. satisfied.

4. curl up on couch with computer. find tax documents. halfway fill out turbotax documents before losing interest.

5. move on to homework. a case study about depression! laugh at the irony.

6. chat with roommate in order to hash out the previous night’s events. nothing is left out. no stone is left unturned! every word of every conversation is examined and then cross examined, dissected, and slapped back together. it is now 11:30.

7.  decide to go running. pull on jacket and shoes. yes, you ran in your pajamas, but are they really considered pajamas if you also wear them to school, and they are actually just a pair of black leggings and nike socks? for a minute you consider becoming less of a slob, then reconsider.

8. leave house without gloves (bad idea). run around columbia heights dodging a lot of couples holding hands on 14th street and galentines dates in search of bottomless mimosas in which to drown their loneliness. there are literally rose petals littered all down the street. run exactly 4 miles of this debauchery before calling it good.

9. come home and shower. donuts on the counter! and bagels. tell yourself no and jump in the shower instead. wash your hair that hasn’t actually been washed for at least 8 days. you’re actually really proud of it. probably too proud. yeah you should probably bathe more. shave armpits. definitely don’t shave legs.

10. get dressed in front of your open window. you probably flash lots of people walking down the street, but whatever.

11. eat almonds while sauteeing kale and eggs. douse kale in soy sauce and eat it standing while talking to roommates about heaven knows what. still hungry. eat an apple. still hungry. eat another apple. still hungry. find yourself eating the exterior of a sesame seed bagel. like, skin the entire thing. become moderately disgusted with yourself.

12. put on your sleeping bag coat to go grocery shopping with your roommates. realize you’ve lost your wallet. hang your head in the shame that this is the 2nd time you’ve lost your wallet in two months. chalk this up as the best day ever. find a random credit card on dresser and activate it so you can buy food in the meantime.

13. traipse down the street with friends to roommate’s car, get inside, turn the key only to find that the battery is dead. groan in unison. call the only other person we know with a car to come and jump ours. get outside and pop the hood in the meantime as to act like we know what the hell is going on in there.

14. car gets jumped. we celebrate with a trader joe’s run. you buy a lot of things impulsively that seem like total luxuries and immediately regret it upon seeing the bill. mahi mahi burgers, soyrizo, a flat of strawberries, a million avocados, fancy hummus and spicy red pepper eggplant dip. (this will be a delicious week ahead.)

15. drive home as quickly as possible while scanning instagram. see a lot of couple on dates. so many selfies. so much handholding. so many descriptions filled with loving superlatives. this day is like visiting a zoo and watching the animals interract; kinda fun, kinda depressing, mostly weird. if you’re lucky, you can even witness them feeding each other.

16. run inside to put away perishables before work. throw on uniform and some semblance of makeup, just in case some attractive single male stumbles into the restaurant, we lock eyes, and just KNOW. put on bronzer because you fancy.

17. zip up sleeping bag coat, scarf, gloves. definitely don’t forget the gloves. ride through the ice wind to work with sharon van etten on full blast, crooning pessimism and heartbreak. you run a lot of stoplights and probably get honked at two or three times. you live for this!

18. get to work marginally late, but sneak in before anybody notices.

19. spend the evening balancing really hot plates of pot roast, filets, cedar plank salmon, and chicken and waffles on your arms. get a lot of couples to go bags. there’s a lot of hand holding. eat one million french fries right out of the fryer. eat a meatless meatloaf with vegan mashed potatoes that was abandoned by somebody at sometime during the night. sweat a lot in the kitchen. give booze recommendations. watch the blizzard outside. wonder if anyone would miss an entire red velvet cake if accidentally “vanished”.

20. finish work, punch out, and suit up for the arctic ride ahead. dump the snow out of your helmet and scrape the ice off the seat. gingerly ride home, ice wind almost knocking you over a few times. pass a lot of drunken lovebirds in dupont leaning on each other in order to make it safely through the cross walk. ride faster than you’ve probably ever ridden. it is now 1 am.

21. stumble inside, rip off clothes to defrost. curl up in bed despite the smell of food that clings to every strand of hair. see what gems social media is willing to offer up. chuckle at the absurdity and relish in the heater blowing directly in your face. fall asleep. you have single-handedly handled the day.

pun intended.

this is january

school is back in session and i’m listening to a conference on health disparities… which is obviously the best time to throw some stuff up on the blog, right? right. Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

last week it actually snowed. yep- about three inches and the city went ballistic. like schools closed and all of dupont circle lost power for a day or two… including a grocery store which was saved given a backup generator. it was apocalyptical. people were trying to shovel their snow with garden shovels and shielding themselves with umbrellas and rain boots. it was adorable. naturally, eliza and i went running through the sludgy mess, and in some strange cosmic clash of worlds, ran into a statue of joan of arc, which we didn’t really realize was joan of arc until i phonetically tried to pronounce JEANNE D’ARC and all but dismissed the chick on a horse. and you probably had to be there, but it had us rolling with laughter.IMG_0039

i’m a big fan of typefaces, this one in shaw is my favorite.  Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

also the painted brick in the snow is really somethingProcessed with VSCOcam with g3 preset

and the clouds. hey clouds.  Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

before school started again, i had a goal to get my room into order. photos framed, throw pillows thrown, etc etc etc. i actually quite like the way things turned out over here in the bombshelter.   Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

as fate would have it, i have another friend from byu who joined the clan of interns, so i finally have another soul to drag me to concerts and i’m not complaining about it. getting beer spilled on me by some sloppy intern every time i do go to a show, however. is something i will gripe about because it is gross. Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

look how adorable these friends are of mine during brunch at the tavern around the corner from my house! forget everything you’ve heard about dc, brunch tradition is the real national treasure.Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

frittatas after a long and grueling thirteen miler in rock creek park. bless eliza and jeff for dragging me out of the house to train with them. they’re training for a marathon (bless them, really) and i’m only signed up for the half, so i’m happy to say that i am trained and hope to keep all my toenails.Processed with VSCOcam with b5 preset

our friends have moved up in the world (literally) from a basement studio apartment into a second story place with WINDOWS!!!!! big windows. and it is only two streets away from our bombshelter, so obviously i like to go over for my recommended daily dose of vitamin d. seasonal affective disorder, be damned!  IMG_0043

church is at least a thirty minute drive away, so every sunday is a straight pilgrimage. here we are, sharing umbrellas and searching for amy’s parked car in the rain, probably late and we don’t care. (false. eliza totally cares) Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

if you were on a quest for world’s richest, creamiest, sugariest hot chocolate in the continental us, look no further than shake shack. but caution! HOT! Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

on my run the other day i took a break at the botanic garden by the capitol building. i have never been to a rainforest, but i think this is probably how it smelled. i felt like i was on the set of some low-budget dinosaur movie. where are the velociraptors?  Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

but really, if you need some plant life, head over there. i know i will be returning SOON!  Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

*hozier’s take me to church plays softly in the background* or not so much. Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

these are the shoes i want to be buried in. my doc martens. i bought them for work, but i actually wear them every day. back off, haters.Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

this is me in madewell. i don’t know. i do know that this sleeping bag coat is the illest thing i’ve ever been gifted.

now who wants to go to the bahamas?

december in washington, dc

lots of good things happened between thanksgiving and christmas when i wasn’t studying for finals. might i add what a RELIEF it is to have semester 1 under by belt?
Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preseti spent a little time babysitting and helping the kids i watch learn their hebrew. yep. these are the kinds of things kids who live on capitol hill do. IMG_3666mahi mahi break at work. whenever i work a double, i TREAT MYSELF! getting free food once in a while doesn’t hurt, either…Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetmy side of town has a lot of really great murals, this one on 0 street is my favorite. this is the sort of side eye perfection i strive for. IMG_3651diana came to visit me right after thanksgiving. i took her on the whirlwind tour of dc complete with a run around the mall to check off all the best monuments. IMG_3643and, of course, with a stop at baked and wired for first dessertProcessed with VSCOcam with c1 presetstrawberry cake cup for the win! paired with hot chocolate that is just… meh. stick to what you know, b&w! IMG_3649for dinner and second dessert we went to founding farmer’s, obviously, where diana had the “best meal EVER!” followed by a tower of carrot cake that was equally as good.
IMG_3633we went to the american history museum, where i was pleasantly surprised by an entire exhibit dedicated to julia child and her kitchen. these are her pans! someone get me a trough to collect my DROOL!!!!!
IMG_3627my favorite view of the washington monument from the jefferson (even in the leafless tree winter drudgery)
IMG_3618in true festive dc fashion, we braved the crazy wind and headed to the zoo to check out the zoolights.IMG_3624it was cold and there were no animals, so instead here is a photo of diana posing as an elephant. Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetthere’s a flea market right down the street from my place that i am incredibly intrigued by. my favorite part is all the mirrors, i want them all. Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetin lieu of gifts, my roommates and i decided to venture out for a fancy dinner at farmers fishers bakers before christmas…. made unfancy by our insatiable desire to order chips and guacamole as an appetizer. Processed with VSCOcam with b1 presethere we are! our holiday selfie. i really love these friends a lot. Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetthis is my favorite food. bless you, falafel salad with heaps of hummus, roasted veggies, tomato salsa, eggplant, and feta from roti, bless. you. IMG_3713christmas decorating here is a competition sport, i swear. IMG_3721one of my favorite parts about city christmas is the plethora of decorations. the christmas tree in downtown dc is quite the spectacle. a photo shoot ensued. Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetyep, hi. what do i do with my hands? Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetseeing this after finishing my finals made me laugh because THESE were my thoughts exactly during the semester. ahh to be on the other side! (for a couple more weeks, at least… eek). Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetonce finals finished, my nurse friends and i treated ourselves to brunch at ted’s bulletin. the food here is pretty “meh” but the atmosphere is top notch. i mean how great is this menu, i mean, really? Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetmy favorite museum in dc is definitely the gallery of art. it is fantastic. seeing little dancer, along with a bunch of other works i learned about in art history at byu is so satisfying. IMG_3740seeing this place decorated for the holidays is also really greatProcessed with VSCOcam with f2 presetsorry for two pics of the same fountain, but you wouldn’t believe how many tried to took me to get this pano without people standing RIGHT IN FRONT of the fountain. tourists! i tell ya! 😉Processed with VSCOcam with b5 presetand last but not least! the famous white house christmas tree! not gonna lie… it was kind of a let down, given the fact that the pretty tree straight from PA is encased in a cage of lights. come on, obama! 😉

a review of february (can you believe it is already done?!)

i’m kind of “meh” to the whole january 2-march 19 sprawl…. especially when the whole lot of it is spent trekking back and forth to byu campus, with tight boundaries ranging from north orem to springville. bleh! i stayed pretty darn busy, though… february means midterms, which means nights like tonight, where i put off studying and instead making peanut butter (dang good stuff, that peanut butter), listen to podcasts about transvestites, and blog. oh my life.

so here’s my month made manifest through some grainy iphone photography. enjoyyyyyy
